Nothing is "hard" about it. You need to know more about the codebase you are planning to run and your Operating system.
Most MU* server codebases are developed in a SPARC/Linux/Unix or other BSD enviroment. Unless ported most of these will not compile with your standard windows compiler (eg. MSVC)
Perhaps the question you should ask "yourself" is do you know enough about this to even ask your previous question. Most sources come with instructions on how to compile the code, and run their startup script. As far as I know Dystopia is a Smaug Derivitive and its creators had no intentions of running it on a windows box.
If your more interested in something to just play around with on your own computer, I would suggest SmaugWiz for a windows operating system. If your knowledge in programming and various OS is non existant I unfortunately could not recomend this hobby to you.
But then again my opinion is simply that.
Peace, Joe

Check out cygwin. It's a 'unix environment' for windows. You will get a lot of warnings, and possibly errors, when first compiling in it. They are not difficult to fix, but it may take some time. Or, you can use a windows compiler, such as Microsoft Visual C++ or Borland. However, windows has many specific quirky things about it that you would have to fix in a standard mud code base. There is an article out there describing how to do all this (specifically pertaining to muds), once I find it, I will post it here..

If you are going to run on a Windows box, which isn't such a horrible idea as some would think, I suggest getting Win2K, or XP. Preferably 2K, as XP has tons of "quirks" you will have to turn off, heh. 2K and XP are MUCH more stable compared to 98, which crashes plenty, and if you are running a mud the whole time...well, that doesn't exactly help :D So get 2K. Contrary to popular belief, Windows is a decent OS for hosting. :D

2k and XP are fine hosting wise.
Do NOT run Win 95 at any costs. There are more security loopholes than you can shake "freedom fries" at, and all sorts of other issues that get 95 labelled as "not an operating system". 98 will survive, but, eh, it's not especially stable.
You also have the choice of emulation, in addition to porting. VMWare, for example. And Cygwin, but it's arguable whether Cygwin is really an emulator... It still works, whether it is or not. And, of course, you could code from scratch... C# and .NET, yum.

i am a user of both windows and linux.. i say i use both because you cannot do some things in one os but you can do it in another. (a simple example) my ISP has blocked tracert .. but i can traceroute out via a linux box.. strange but it does work. i would never completely sign over to the Light side(linux) as some games do not work or run poorly in linux..
my advice is to leave your windows box how it is and purchase or steal a low spec system for linux testing.. then you are free to trash and rebuild as you wish
