Hey folks, I want to draw attention to the area description for this section ( its displayed on the Topics Menu ). I modified it to make it more clear about our stance on whats acceptable for this area. I know there are a few of you who choose to comment and criticize many of the posts here from people starting up a mud and seeking staff help. Those comments have no business here! If the post is for a mud seeking staff and you are not interested in the position, DO NOT POST, if the post is from a person seeking work in a mud and you are not interested in hiring them, DO NOT POST! We will be enforcing this so please try to adhere to this policy.
Many of you know I try to keep my moderator hat off in the forums and have for many years but I am hearing and reading from many sources how pointless it is trying to have discussion on this site - I will be working to fix that reputation and if that means some folks need to lose their access to the forums than that will happen. I hope it does not come to that.
Thank you, Icculus

I really Hate having to do it but I think this place needs some shaking up. There was a time, maybe a decade ago, when I was very quick to hit the ban button and the only people back then who got mad at me about it were the people seeing the 'Access Denied Message'. I am REALLY hoping I don't have to resort to that but, well, lets just leave it at that.
I am also encouraged Hades! :)

You could really do a lot to fix the site's reputation with only one or two individuals losing their access - just saying.

Out of curiosity, if person "A" posts a legitimate topic saying he/she has a mud and needs assistance, and person "B" posts a reply something like, "Hey, you and your MUD aren't legit and you're full of icky bug juice.", and now person "A" responds back, does OP (person A) get in trouble for responding to the reply?
(Comment added by ZyreXiaix on Tue Apr 24 13:03:52 2012)
(I also find it funny that the three people who have replied thus far are three of the largest offenders, ... yet they totally love this idea.)

Other than the recent incident of asking a poster to clarify what they meant by "for profit" when running a game whose license prohibits such (the subsequent clarification was provided, and they only received encouragement and useful bumping of their thread from me thereafter), I -implore- you to find any examples of me needlessly trolling, flaming, interfering, criticizing, or anything of the sort that somehow makes me one of the "largest offenders". Typically anytime I post in someone else's adverts, it's when a discussion has already been generated that I'm participating in, other times to offer words of encouragement or advice from someone who has been an active developer (in one form or another) for 10 years and has been a pretty regular poster here for about 6 years. Other times have been a gentle nudge toward proper forum protocol to help, if anything, the poster -avoid- the flaming and trolling that the site has gained a reputation for (one recent instance was a friendly reminder to someone that generally, a poster should restrict their adverts to once every week or two as per the forum guidelines, as people tend to flame people who post more than that). I think you'd find that the vast majority of my posts here are in fact useful and productive, troll and flame free. So I sincerely ask you, if I have a misconception about my behavior here or have a misconception about how others perceive me here, give me some examples that would get me lumped in with the likes of Jodah, otherwise I think that comparison, if unfounded, would call for an apology on your part.

The OP in the thread should try to refrain from taking the bait, but I cant fault them for wanting to respond. The fault will lie with the responder that was posting here only to derail the request.
As far as I am concerned everyone here will start with a clean slate regarding this forum area, but I cannot promise any warnings will be issued from this point on.
It should be very easy to follow the new rule, just ignore this section entirely unless you are either looking for staff or looking for a job in a mud. :)

give me some examples that would get me lumped in with the likes of Jodah Wow thanks for dragging my name under the bus Hades. Listen, I started here posting ideas on how to improve muds from a player perspective and 20 people jump on me. It's been survival of the fittest here. I don't attack, I counter attack and I give my honest opinions, I guess people on the internet hate opinions. I love muds and I enjoy talking about them and appreciate the opportunity to do so. Now that there's a little moderation here, I can change and so can everyone else.

I don't attack
I can come up with a list of threads an arm long where you begin with ignorant comments and questions. This new rule is almost explicitly aimed directly at you.

Sigh, will the attacks ever end?
Anyway I can do the same thing to you and probably everyone else on here. In fact 99.9% of your posts are meant to inflame.
Icculus said clean slate. Leave me alone and I'll leave everyone else alone.

Like HK, I would also love to know why I am lumped in with the likes of Jodah. I join discussions that are already taking place, I counter Jodah's barbs cross-thread, I offer helpful advice and I sometimes (not so much as I used to, because meh - busy with life) point out the egregious cases of thread necro/wrong board/new thread for a reply. Jodah wrote: Listen, I started here posting ideas on how to improve muds from a player perspective and 20 people jump on me. It's been survival of the fittest here. I don't attack, I counter attack and I give my honest opinions, I guess people on the internet hate opinions. The problem is that your opinions are often provably wrong and harmful (i.e. Legal Advice by Jodah). That is why 20 people jump on you, especially after it is explained to you why your opinion/advice is wrong and harmful. You play the surprised, innocent bystander card well, but deep down, you know there is intent behind your actions. Nearly everyone else on the site knows it. I know a number of people who have left TMC, citing you as the reason. They discuss it on other sites where they know your antics wouldn't go a day without perma-ban.

Oh hi Lyanic, thanks for stopping by with your personal attacks again. Apparently I'm this vast criminal mastermind with hidden strategic agendas behind every post. *rolls eyes*

I'm not surprised. Why debate dissenting views when you could just silence them?

This is a really refreshing change. I find it really frustrating when I see a post for staff, and people start tearing them to shreds for no good reason.
This has never been an especially kind forum, and yes, we can be vicious, but I've long wished that the staffing board could just be left to staffing.

Am actually curious about this. Obviously if someone posts for builders it'd be uncalled for to respond saying that their mud was a steaming pile of manure. Is it safe to assume that if I logged on and found it to be violating the DIKU license that posting that as a reply still be within the new rules though?

Maybe a better approach is to create a post in another forum like the Legal Issues forum.

A post of that nature would belong elsewhere, the best place would be legal as Tyche suggested or General would also be fine. The threads here ( besides this one of course ) should only be communications between muds seeking staff and players seeking work, nothing else.
Thanks, Iccy

Not kind indeed! I have referred to it recently as the wild west. Makes me wonder what the place would be like if all those years ago I instead chose to make the forums completely moderated ( eg all posts must be approved before going live ) rather than left for the community to policy ( which did work for awhile )... -Icculus

Jodah is the worst offender for posting random rubbish on every single thread thats posted.. one day a while back on every single thread on the front page jodah was the last person to have posted on there... and the posts were not even relevant to the topics...

This may be the case, I don't know because I have been absent from the forums for too long. My 7-yr old and 8-yr old try to occupy all my time, and I love it, but it takes me away from everything else. In any event, Jodah as well as everyone else here gets a clean slate ( as far as I am concerned ) and I ask you all to forgive any past trespasses and try to look forward. A proposed set of guidelines to live by: 1. If someone new creates an account here and posts something in the wrong place, or violates what everyone else knows as proper etiquette instead of flaming, try to explain politely what they did and what they should have done. 2. If someone that has been here for awhile does something similar try to not to take the bait, instead either add them to your killfile or just email me - My itchy ban finger will not tolerate much at the moment. 3. When in doubt, killfile someone that bothers you here and you wont need to see their posts again. I know its hard to overlook past discretions but I am asking nicely that you all try. -Iccy
