The BEST possible thing you could do is read this well-made and inspirational article first:

That link/Jodah actually tells you surprisingly very little and I would encourage you to just disregard it. You would
do much better just with google.

This link won't answer your question, but it's where I recommend you start: http://deadsouls.net/articles/newcomer.html

Lol, don't listen to Lyanic, he's just bitter and uncreative. His link doesn't show you anything and there's a reason his mud usually maxes out at 2 players. If you wish to compete, the BEST possible thing you can do is follow this other link, it'll explain old worn-out mud concepts:

Don't have much time. Saw Jodah posting again under "new_admin" and "admin" and came for some infinite lolz. Needless to say, he never disappoints!

P. S. If any admin is prepared to keep Jodah occupied with giving advice on their game and not posting here, I'm sure TMC users can start a pot for you. This can be a well-paying gig!

For sure. It's particularly lulzy when he loses at his own game, and the best he can come up with is a personal attack. It has
become such a predictable pattern at this point - and he says I'm the one who lacks creativity. :-P

I'd throw in about $3.50!

Don't be mad that your mud constantly loses new players
because you refuse to make room descriptions.

So your wanting to make a mud, I will give you some info

1. Its not easy, it takes a lot of imagination, and
creativity.

2. Its going to wear your brain out, be sure to get some

Many, if not all, successful MUD admins started out as helpers on an already existing/established game. You have to learn to walk before you can run, etc.

If you apprentice yourself to a game you love for a year or two, you will no longer wonder where to start and will be able to ask some more specific questions.

All things start with an idea. Almost all muds start up because someone out there has a different view of what a game should be. It's fun to say "I want to open a mud" but that is not good enough. If you don't have an idea of what you want, then you won't have a goal. If you don't have a goal, you won't know what to do. So when you tell me you don't know where to start, it makes me think that you don't have a goal in mind.

So in a large sense I agree with plamzi, go build for someone else for awhile on a game that you like. After you have some idea of what you really want from a game, feel free to splinter off and start your own.

False. All things start with inspiration. Ideas come way
down the road.

Coming from Jodah, this statement is believable. He's been inspired for so
many years now, and still not a single idea. Down the road, maybe, Easter.
I mean, Jodah.
