1. How fast of a server do I need? Sat Jul 1, 2006 [2:44 PM]

I wanted to start a ROM up so I could get some coding practice in without trashing someone else's codebase, as well as make a place that me and a few friends can screw around and whatnot. How fast of a computer, as far as processor and ram, would I need to make a decent server? I want it to support up to say, 30 players, just in case I ever want to use it for a serious mud. Any suggestions will be appreciated.

Unless you're planning anything major or sharing a host with a bucketload of other muds, you can get by with 300Mb of diskspace, 64Mb of RAM, and a 90MHz Pentium. Anyone that tells you different is trying to sell something.
That's what my smaug used to run on back in 1997, and it was zippy enough when we were peaking at 20 players online.
Had to keep the logfiles rotated and archived though.
As for bandwidth, DSL should be enough for 30 as long as you're got a comfortable upstream rate. Whether or not this is less reliable than getting it professionally hosted depends on who both your DSL provider or potential host is...

With a 200MHz pentium it takes about 10-20 minuts to compile during which the mud will be slow as hell. Not to mention what happens if you do anything remotely cpu intensive. I'd rather not find out what it's like with a 90MHz Pentium ;)

Somewhere around 1GHz should be fine imo.

I ran a pretty hefty c++ codebase on a 200mhz, 512MB ram for years. Compilation would take 40-45 minutes. I would "nice" the build to minimize impact on the server during these times. I never used the server as my primary development box though, testing and development were handled by a much beefier machine at home.

I find that with large worlds, ram is much more important than cpu, particularly if you're running multiple instances.

I guess the point is that you can get away with a pretty low end machine. Certainly the sub $500 1ghz boxen availble today will be more than adequate.

On a pentium 3 451MHz 124mb ram I can compile my (smaug dervied) MUD (from clean) in just over 3 minutes. And I got this for free :)

While you could run something very low end, I'd probably allow for at least a 300 Mhz with 128MB RAM and probably a minimum of a 3GB drive so you have enough room for your Linux, swap drive, compilers, dev tools, and keep a couple of backups (just in case you need to revert due to complete alteration of code or you or someone else forgets to back up the original file they're working on.)

I'm running my system (both building and dev ports) on an old 800Mhz with 256MB RAM and a 15GB drive and we don't seem to get much lag at all on a cable connection. Then again, we're also not yet open to the public but even then I don't forsee much lag.

do you know how to make a mud from scratch?
In theory... yes.

make my computer run it?
In theory... yes.

The total number of hours to complete such an endeavor are in the hundreds
however. (And may require a few plane tickets to where you live.)

Please find some pre-coded MUD and follow its directions to install. Or post a
new question on the Beginner's Board along the lines of, "I want to do this,
please point me in the way so I can learn."

I just have to shout Kudos to Lockheed. I find it very rare in this world where someone can make a correction and suggestion and it come out in a decent manner.

Standard response is "HEY STUPID wrong place why not go google it." As someone who has been doing Moo's for longer than most pokemon mud admistrators have been out of diapers. I find it appalling how little help we give to newbie’s sometimes.

So sincerely great job lockheed.
