My cygwin (version unknown, packages downloaded 4-3-04) will not work at all in windows xp pro. It is not allowing common commands like ln, ls, pico, rm, etc. I have tried reinstalling it but to no avail. Please advise me on what to do and I'm not able to run linux and get online so it's not an option right now.

It's always difficult to solve 'It doesn't work' problems without more details. What exactly is the error message when you type 'ls' for example? What did you install ? (pico is not part of the basic install, for example). Do you get a working bash shell when you start Cygwin ? Were there any error messages during installation ? How are you starting Cygwin ? Which options did you choose during installation ? (in particular the one which determines which users it's accessible to, hence where it's installed)

My apologies.
The errors I'm getting is that command is 'not found.'
On the post install tasks area it is giving me that cygwin dlls aren't installed and to reinstall. Yet if I reinstall, it still gives the same issues. I have restarted after installing/uninstalling then going back to do fresh install. No dice.
I installed --every thing-- (dloaded all the packages that dload by default option).
I set it up for all users and UNIX (vs DOS) file structure.

I'm going to dload every possible package including the source files. Can't really lose anything at this point.

I had a somewhat similar problem when I first installed cygwin (probably a couple of years ago).
As I recall, it failed to install one of the main dlls, which I presume was a fault in the installation routine.
I eventually tracked down a copy elsewhere on the internet and installed it (jumping through various hoops like finding a way to uncompress bz2 files without using cygwin).
Your best options are probably: (1) check the Cygwin mailing lists in case the problem is known and already fixed - and report it there. (2) Wait for it to be fixed (3) See if you can identify the missing dlls, obtain them and install manually. (4) Alternatively try Microsoft's recently launched Unix emulator.

I believe it's free.
Not tried it myself, so I can't comment on its quality (or otherwise).
