We give tests to all potential builders to make sure they have the basic skills to build a decent room description. Here are the results of a test we had the other night. I must warn you, this is NOT a joke.

I can think of a million things are that are wrong with these rooms. Most importantly, we were looking for 5 line room descriptions and something a little more creative. Although I guess you could say these are pretty creative…

Has anyone else seen anything like this?

Spelling looks OK to me.
Grammar could do with a bit of improvement, but not too bad.
Punctuation a bit dubious, but I've seen worse.
Originality -110%! Unlike any rooms I've ever seen!!!
Perhaps the descriptions are a bit short, but did you really want to read more?

Snap him up before someone else does and make your place a real talking point amongst MUDs :):)

It looks like the builder just had no actual building experience, and was learning how your OLC works by trial and error.

Yeah, think about which a builder who is working for you would prefer:

A) Testing something out to learn how it works? You're fired! Haha, everyone look at this idiot trying to learn something, lolololol.

B) It looks like volunteering your personal time to help us out, you were testing out how our system works so you could do your work. Are there any questions I can answer for you?

:)

I can see where the builder made some mistakes, however his/her (from content i'd say a he) desc's really were bad, and intentionally so. I say a few mistakes are ok, even expected, but I wouldn't hire anyone that didn't take the test Semi-seriously atLEAST!

Sadly, I have seen worse.

They created a character named 'Rayeningay' for their imm.

Naturally, I was flattered.

On the other hand, I do agree that it's 110% originality. Too bad it's not constructive. :(

Yeah, if this was their final "submission", then it's a pretty sad state of affairs.

Sad part is I've seen worse as well, not just once either.

The worst part is, these areas I'm going to describe were actually connected into the game.

This is in a Tolkein based mud. (Middle Earth/Lord of the Rings for those that may not know)

an area filled with Cavemen, Cavewomen, and primitive children.

a museum filled with dinosaurs and other things

Gilligan (as in Gilligan's Island)

automatons, clockwork dragons, BARNEY the Dinosaur

an area called Mt Nevermind (this wouldn't be the same Mount Nevermind from Dragonlance? Oh wait, it sorta was) that had giant hamsters.

And area which somehow paired trolls and lepechauns (and yes, the little leps did indeed drop pots of gold folks)

Now, be that as it may, this mud also had a standard builder policy on spelling, punctuation, etc. Yet many of their rooms said very little in long winded descriptions (ie: the description had little to do with the room it was describing), rampant spelling errors, the grammar was horrendous, and more.

On my own mud, I had to fire a builder because well simply put in my code base there is a short description and a long description. The short comes first, then the long, the player can choose to see either, both or none. The short description is generally one or two lines giving a quick general overview of the room, with details provided in the long description. Simple enough right?

For some reason the person would start the short description, go one line, and immediately change to the syntax of the long description. So the short description would end in the middle of it, continuing in the long description. (I erased all his work, or I'd show examples).

And what made things worse he'd put in random captial letters on words, forget to use punctuation (I think I saw one '.' in a 8 line description. And for some reason all of his exits led to room 1. He made 15-20 rooms like that before I caught it, went over what was to be done, walked him through about 3 rooms. I then had to go pick my wife up from work, when I came home and checked his work, he had gone right back to what he'd done before. I fired him on the spot.

I think that guy added a few more gray hairs to my growing collection. lol
