Came across this at another site... http://ftp.game.org/cgi-bin/directory?/pub/mud/diku/merc/medI haven't touched any DIKU derived code in nearly 15 years. At the time, it seemed reasonably well organized and easy to dive into, but this stuff is a huge pile of spaghetti. It was interesting though, after 10+ years of controversy, to finally see some (old) Medievia source code for myself. -Gromble

You're basing your opinion on what is arguably the absolute worst example of Diku code floating around out there. As you noticed, code spaghetti would be a mild understatement. But I suppose that's due to the years of hard work obfuscating the origins of the codebase to try and hide the truth we all know:.

How come I think it would be hilarious to download that, add the credits in, and steal half of Med's playerbase? I mean...they CAN'T really successfully sue me when they violate the license themselves...

Awesome. holocode.c was one of my favorite examples of bad C code for quite a while. It's good to see it back in circulation! Oh man, and catacomb.c ... you can only truly understand its genius after you've mastered coding at all levels.

I found the quote you referred to...
Vryce:
“I have developed from someone with no coding skills to someone who has mastered coding at all levels.”
I'm sure he's learned something along the way, but the failure to put that into context and recognize how little that knowledge amounts to when compared to the field of software engineering only highlights how absurd a statement this is and erodes any remaining credibility.
There's an old expression that goes something like "true wisdom is recognizing how little you actually know".

Thank you for the wonderful resource, I didn't have time to read all 225 pages, but I will later today for humor value as I'm sure that any Thesis by Vryce will indeed be humorous and have more lies than truth. (Comment added by Drizzt1216 on Mon Jan 29 11:30:55 2007)Err..Vryce's wife.
