I know they license it for use by other companies, but I do not believe it is public domain. Valve, unlike many hobbyists whose code gets leaked has the means to pursue legal action however. There's documentation out there which describes how aspects of the engine works though. I have a few pdfs that Valve released to the public describing some of these features in detail actually.

I don't mean to lecture or anything. I just know that if I personally happened across their engine and didn't have rights to it that I would not use it for any project. It would be hard for me to resist the urge to tear it apart and go through it, but in the end I wouldn't use it. The repurcussions from using it are not something I would want to face.

Yes, i was not planning on releasing any titles without having a license for the engine...just wanted to see what i could do with it and its limitations, thats all. But thank you for the kindness.

I did a quick search with a couple of P2P clients just to see if it's out there and I didn't have anything pop up. That would be the smart way for someone to put something like that out there because it's real hard to sue all the various users, and it probably will not come back to whoever leaked it.

I am uploading one of the pdfs I have to the web. I'm not able to find all of them right now. They seem to either be scattered, or deleted. It's a slightly older document that they released to the public, but I'm not certain if they still have it up or not. I know it's not what you are looking for, but it does go into the design features of the Source Engine. It's the best I could come up with. Sorry.

Thanks again, Nym, for replying. I heard that the man who hacked valve turned himself in and then valve took legal action, im pretty sure he went to prison for that one. That's why i was not sure if anything would be on the net about it or not, i did my own search and found nothing, but im not that great at surfing the web either.

Im currently downloading that file, though it might take awhile since im on dial-up, lmao!

It really isn't much. It's more like a sales flier for developers that may be interested in purchasing the rights to the Source Engine than anything else. Goes into a few of the features which may not be appearant in the game however.

Boy! I would hate to see the pattern that could be formed by my posts. Please don't ever point it out to me unless I really need a slap upside the head.

Someone who is ONE person, sitting behind a computer, who wants an all volunteer staff of up to or more than 15 people, with 5+ years of C++ experience (for his programmers).... just wants to get a bunch of people, to make a MUD for him. Even though he has no idea in hell what he is doing.

Anyone who says they have 5+ years of C++ experience is probably lying. Just reading C++ for Dummies 5 years ago doesn't count as 5 years experience.

If they had 5+ years of C++ experience, REAL EXPERIENCE, they would be making thousand and they would or should and most likely could write their own, why join up in a project with a bunch of people you don't have control over when you are doing the grunt work?

I always look forward to your responses Tyche, you are always very helpful, and quite entertaining... I find myself agreeing once again... *dons Dumbass of the Month cap on his head*

Gotta love your respnses, Tyche. You put everything into such good perspective. I especially liked the studio design thread.

Without getting into the 'are you for real' questions that are begging to be asked, I'll just sit idly by and nod my head in mute agreement to any responses posted on this (or the referenced) threads.

First off, why cant anyone post on here without getting flamed nowdays. Secondly, i have found a full EXPERIENCED staff...and who said this was ever voluntary? to me paying by royalties is considered a paying job! Next off, i explained why i asked if anyone knew anything on the Half-Life 2 engine, mearly so i could just play around with it and stuff. So with all this i would like to say that you can shut the hell up, becuase you have no idea what i have done or what i know!

Hahahahaha.

Just the fact that someone who doesn't know how to put a MUD on a server and run it, starts a "company" called "Gamesoft Studios" (<-!!!) and then asks for the HL2 source cause he wants to see what he can do with it... Hilarious.

Last time I checked, Half-Life 2 was a FPS, not a text-based game. Gaymsoft studio focuses on text-based games don't they?

Tyche, marry me.

did i ever say it was ever for anything but personal use?! Anyway, im done arguing, all it shows is immaturity. Actions speak louder than words, therefore i will continue to try and finish this game. Once i do, then we will see who is cracking the jokes!

"Spotlight Studios is a newly formed gaming development studio that is focusing its innovations and energy toward the creation of text-based MUD's.

We are looking for a full voluntary staff of experienced game creators who want to stop dreaming about making the best games available and start living it."

Sounds pretty VOLUNTARY to me.

If you were serious you'd know that Valve distributes the Half-Life 2 SDK for free for anyone who buys HL2 through Steam. You can make free MODs for Half-Life 2 using the code.

I personally have the source because (gasp) anyone who owns the game can download it!

If you want to license the engine, talk to Valve. I think it's between $5000 and $15000, but probably more.
