I want move with my mud (LDMud 3.3.719) to a dedicated server (linux), where I plan to use the privileged telnet port 23 for my mud. Unfortunately, the driver needs to start as root-process to bind to a port below 1024. Does someone have a patch for the actual LDMud Driver that gives up root as soon as it has bound itself to the port and the mud will run again with limited rights, or can give me a detailed description on how to do that myself?
My apologizes for my bad spelling.
warmly, Kiri@Holy_Mission

MUDs typically run on a port above 1024 and forward port 23 to it instead.

That could work, I just wonder if firewalls of corresponding hosts wouldn't be offended because of the change of the responding port of the mud-server, but if I remember right, I can also change the source port of the outgoing traffic from the unprivileged mudport to 23. I wouldn't came up with that alone, thanks a lot for the hint ;-).
