I am having some trouble connecting to Dark Mists. I am a
noob, and I really don't get what clients are about. I have
windows 7, and I tried Gmud. I typed in the host and port, and
all it says is

%%% Connecting to 70.159.81.38 on port 2222.
%%% Disconnected from server.
%%% Error Connecting: Connection timed out
%%% Retrying connection to 70.159.81.38 on port 2222.
%%% Disconnected from server.

Could anybody help me?

It looks like your getting connected and then being dropped. On the other hand, my client says it can't connect at all. Try using darkmists.org maybe, I'm assuming the only mud by that name listed on here is the one you want. If so, the name seems to work, but the not the ip address you give. That mud's IP address as listed here on TMC is 24.217.21.230

I'd check the listing of the mud and click the "Check Connection" button to see if it's even up.
