1. Why *shouldn't* I post in the wrong forum? Mon Sep 8, 2003 [3:23 PM]

I, like, want to get more players for my favorite MU*. And I heard that TMC has plenty of MU*'ers, so I signed up so I could let them all know about the cool MU* that I play. But everyone gets upset when I post in the highest-traffic forum - I was just trying to reach as many people as I could! Screw TMC, not like I ever cared about these boards, I can just leave after I advertise here. How can posting to every forum [and thus getting more of an audience] possibly NOT get more players?

A very childish point of view. People who are looking for code snippets do not want to be bombarded with advertisements for MUDs. If you want to advertise your MUD, put it on the listing, and post in the _correct_ forum. Doing otherwise is how people get their IP banned and all their posts deleted (in most forums I know :)

Besides, I believe there was an acceptable use policy that you signed off on in order to post.

Please note the format of other posts on this board, and realize that if this TMC FAQ is to be effective, it needs constructive answers of the type I implied, rather than more of the same exact flames I just pointed out would not work!

To make my implications less implicit and more explicit, I'll give an example of what might work within the desires of a newbie rather than rely on their caring about things they, well, don't care about.

Some members of this forum have reported that seeing advertisements off of the proper board makes them want to never try that MU*.

See? By appealing to their interest, you can get their attention right away - demanding they accept brand-new rules which contradict their current preferences but have no readily visible merit to them, is a sure way to alienate instead of convince people!
