Hi.. I have played on quite a bit of non-rp muds before, as well as some RP muds/mushes. The only MUSH that I have played on was called "Elendor" (quite a popular one based on tolkein's works). This was the most fun I've had in a LONG time, but stopped participating in the MUSH due to rl problems. I am now looking for a NEW roleplaying MUSH. I say MUSH but I am really open to anything that just lets me roleplay - I would definitely prefer a solely roleplay MUSH though because grinding levels out is not appealing to me (if I want to do that, I play WoW/D2). My ideal MUSH would be a heavily dark themed game, the setting really isn't important (prefer fantasy but modern or even cyberpunk is fine - as long as its DARK). I might even be content with a generic fantasy setting that allows me to play a more "dark" character (think Necromancer, or Warlock from DnD/WoW, or, even better, a Vampire). A Vampire MUSH/MUD would be GREAT but the only thing I can seem to find is Vampire the Masquerade ones and I do not know the ruleset (if I don't need to know the ruleset when I start, I'm definitely down for some learning though). I want a MUSH that allows me to jump in/out at my lesiure and have somebody to roleplay with at most times in-game. I'm not picky about activity, but I like at least 10 people in game during busy hours (the more the merrier!). Thank you, I look forward to the replies :) (Also, if I can't find anything, I might just try to play for the Sauron side of things in Elendor - that sounds quite "dark" to me.. but I'm not sure... if anybody has experience here let me know! Elendor is a fun MUSH, I just don't want to get into it heavily to find out its not what I wanted.) (Comment added by Sonolin on Wed Sep 23 23:37:39 2009)I do not care if you recommend something that isn't a MUSH - I just want to roleplay. I DO NOT want a grind-based game of any sort! Well, if is heavily roleplay centered, I guess that's okay, but I don't want to grind all day - it wears me out I tell you! ;) (Comment added by Sonolin on Wed Sep 23 23:42:20 2009)One last thing - this MUD is something around what I am looking for: http://www.mudconnect.com/mud-bin/adv_search.cgi?Mode=MUD&mud=Eventide+MUSH - it sounded very promising, until it stated it was based upon the "Twilight" series. Please, don't make me puke.. :)

I didn't know "Twilight" fans could read.

I know, right? My sister's reading that book, and got my mom all into the series.. Now they talk about it all the time. It makes me want to kick a baby whenever I hear the name now.
Back on topic, I found out that "Threshold RPG" has a Necromancer guild (which I do not think they had before) that looks quite promising to my interests. I have played this MUD before, and it was very fun (as a fighter) - the guild has its own theme and rules making you feel like you are actually in the world.
The only things I dislike about it are 1) a lot of grinding! and 2) equipment is not saved, which makes logging off/on a chore sometimes. Though, I can look over this (for now at least) as threshold is a VERY fun game and the roleplay is quite good and plentiful.
Now to only hope the necromancer's guild is as cool as the fighter's guild. Oh please don't fail me threshold :).
I will let you know what I discover after I reach level 10 (another thing I dislike about it - you have to reach level 10 to join a guild.. does scare away non-roleplayers though, so its ok). If the guild is cool enough (and DARK enough :)), this will probably be the mud I will be playing a lot.
I would definitely enjoy a MUSH, though..

And, hopefully, it isn't too much of a chore to actually join the guild.. seems like their "cool" guilds are all hard to get into. The ends justify the means, though.

Dark Isles may be an option. It's still a MUD, its codebase being heavily modified Circle.
It's completely classless / level-less, with an arrangement of different crafts and skills that you can put into. That actually separates combat from that option all together. While it doesn't have a complete player-based economy, it does do well in its own right.
As for races or "inflictions", the way they run is that when you acquire a total of 5,000 total roleplay points, you've passed a mark and are allowed special characters, like wolfkin (much like werewolves), Vek (similar to Vampires), Dryth (telepaths), and half-blooded races.
The shops, connections (say nobility), and whatever else you may get, all can come through the RP without having to actually have hit that previous tally. Just depends on how you get in.
The RPP is automated based on the usage of Prayer, Thinks, and Emotes. These can be used to dump into skills, but you can also up them by using the skills or crafts themselves, for money (like blacksmithing, mining, leatherworking, tailoring, tattooing).
The world itself is dark enough, with the mythos being geared towards a post-apocalyptic environment; while there are only a handful of us players who actually strive for the deeper, darker side of the game's base, we are there daily. Besides us, there are plenty of others who do their own dirty deeds that don't have to do with the world itself, just the characters.

One last thing - this MUD is something around what I am looking for: http://www.mudconnect.com/mud-bin/adv_search.cgi?Mode=MUD&mud=Eventide+MUSH - it sounded very promising, until it stated it was based upon the "Twilight" series. Please, don't make me puke.. :)
While I won't argue with your point that yes, it is Twilight, and let's face it, Twilight tends to summon up images of crazy fangirls -- I WILL say that being affiliated with Twilight doesn't make our game full of obsessed and under-educated teens. I am staff, so perhaps I do hold a bias, but I will say that a majority of our players are 1) high quality RPers; 2) are original characters; and 3) are not not crazy and obsessive Twilight fans. Anyway, I understand that the setting/theme isn't your cup of tea, but I just wanted to clarify for anyone else reading and possibly judging. ;) Good luck on your search for a MUSH.

Check out Dark Forces MUSH. We just opened to public applications, and as the name suggests, it is a fairly dark setting. It's World of Darkness, but you don't need to know much when starting out! Our staff is helpful and we are all experienced players. I started there with no previous knowledge of WoD and love it. darkforces.arthmoor.com port 5555 http://darkforcesmush.wikia.com/Peak times: Weeknights, 5:30pm-Midnight PST, Weekends

Come and try out Dark Risings.
darkrisings.com: 1313
DR is a mud, but we have a strong RP history which has been developing since it opened more than 13 years ago. We try to incorporate player stories into the greater story of the mud itself, and new ones are always welcome. With a very few exceptions, our players are mature and helpful, and very strong RPers. It's a game of wits, more than anything else. Typically we average 25 players during peak evening hours, 10 during daytime hours, and 5 in the wee hours of the morning. In addition to those numbers, we typically average about 5 staff members around as well.
Leveling up is very easy compared to other muds. You can get to the top level, 50, in a few hours if you create a character with low XP. We also offer many areas with built in quests which give you XP as a reward for exploring areas and interacting with mobs. It's possible to level up entirely from doing quests, with more going in all the time. As a mud, we tend to be a little goofy on the non-RP chat channel, but while in character we strive for dark, intense RP which is often centred around vampires. You can't start out as a vampire, but you can become one if your RP is good enough to find the brood leaders and impress them -- or if you can find one of the legendary Books of Power and use it for that purpose. We also offer Necromancer as a class and the undead Lich race. Dark Risings is also a PK mud, but unless you intend to spit on people, rob them, or stab them, you don't have to worry much about getting attacked. In any case, all new players are protected from PK until they've learned the ropes enough to stay out of trouble (assuming they want to). Hope to see you there :)

I was in much your position recently, as there really aren't that many active rp or rpi muds still out there. But, I found a good one, and I'd recommend it; depths ofchaos. It's a mix of hack and slash and rp, but it is still very much an rpi, as while we have levels, and you still gain exp, you gain exp via says and emotes, meaning the grinding is essentially just engaging in rp. The staff are very good and helpful, and it looks like this will be one of the top games soon enough. It is just starting out, so there are bug fixes and the like, but that doesn't detract much from the atmosphere, and there's already an established player base to rp with. http://www.depthsofchaos.webs.comCheck out the website and give us a try.

Why does no one realize they're replying to a thread that has been necro'd twice now?

Weird, I didn't know it was a necro thread. If it pops up as a new thread, I read it. This one seemed like it was worth replying to, so I did. Never even occurred to me to check the date on the original post. And anyway, people should still check out DR :)
