Why is it that people have a fobia of playing the expendible and generaly 'secondary' characters in any role playing game. Eventualy always having to be the hero gets boring to me. Has anyone else found playing 'the common man' to be interesting from time to time? getting to react to wizards and warriors of renound as amazing adds spice to their game and even alittle of yours, to my way of thinking.

Nurrin,
The greatest character I've ever played on a text-based, online environment was a serf on an isolated, manorial field. Granted, there was only one other player playing a serf and it was rare for the administration to play the NPC manorial lord. When roleplaying did take place, however, it was incredible.

After several months the young peasant decided to attempt escape while the lord was attending a trial in the main polis. I actually made it quite a ways from the manor before the notion hit me that the serf was being tracked.

In the end, it can be said simply that the dogs found him and that was the end of his presence on this mortal coil. But the hours I spent running from the hounds were more enjoyable than any dragon I've ever fought.

As a last note to players: administrators absolutely adore it when you create characters that are off the beaten path, have severe faults and would rarely take up the role of hero. At The Cathyle Project, it's these types of characters that I'll shape my plots around, not the video-game cutout heroes.

Best,
Edward Falconer,
Creative Director - The Cathyle Project

I don't! Even on my favourite WoT MUD, my Aes Sedai character is the daughter of a Lugarder prostitute/waitress who married a customer, moved to Tar Valon and had an inn called 'The Night-Long Rider' after her. :)

On Armageddon, my best PC had to be the midwife who was hired by a noble's consort to run her bakery, ended up getting involved in politics, and was shot by a magickal arrow in front of a noble in a fancy inn. I arranged the death with an imm, but I wanted skulduggery to add to the plots. The *imm* decided on the arrows :)

Okay, that's enough of that. I feel the best characters are the ordinary people caught up in great events. Like Garion in David Eddings 'The Belgariad.'

Don't be afraid to play the country clod come to the city or the alcholic waitress looking for a man. These roles can be rewarding.

Erm Garion wasn't really an ordinary person, saviour of the world and all that.
