Let me start off with some information about myself.I've played other MUDs before and so I am not new to MUDs (so complexity isn't an issue), but what I have always found lacking is a purpose. I've tried PK muds and had tons of fun,for a time. However, the fun just wore off, because apart from partying up with my friends, grinding togther for exp and equipment, there was nothing else to keep me interested. The "story" may of served as a background but it never changed and it didn't affect how I played anyway.
I'ved tried RPI Muds (I like em) but I can't help but feel as if after hours of emoting and the like I want to go off and fight! I want to join an epic battle and either fight mobs or maybe other players (like a clan war scenario).
So ideally, I'd like a MUD where there is PURPOSE. I want to try somethign where the story or theme matters and it affects me (i suppose that is why I started trying RPIs) but at the same time I want to freedom to go off and join in epic PK or battles that relate to the theme and maybe even player-driven?
As for crafting, I have never been too big on that so it is not a big factor.

You may want to give Alter Aeon a try. There is a strong quest line for new players, and at higher levels a lot of independent storylines in regions of the game. The Combine is a good example, as it's a large region composed of over a hundred different areas, with quest lines, story, and plot weaved into it everywhere. And of course, we have combat, grouping, and clans. If you're blind we have soundpacks; if you're sighted, we have a custom client with a built in mapper and sound. We hope you see you there! -dentin Alter Aeon MUD http://www.alteraeon.com

I encourage you to come and try Dark Risings. The purpose of DR is to become part of the interactive game world, and to leave your mark on it. There are ways for characters to make fundamental change to the game through their RP, such as with ancient artifacts (which can be used to change the fabric of the game world and which, for many players, is a purpose in itself -- to find, obtain and use, through exploration, PK, or RP, these "Books of Power"); by joining the magic guild Arcaenum to develop and create a new line of spells (which we will code for you); or simply by RPing well enough to catch the eye of the staff, who will often work behind the scenes to help make your story become as epic as possible. We offer both PK and RP, and they are tied together so that PK will naturally arise out of RP as player stories merge and conflict. For example you might want to play a cleric, who becomes a Hunter and focuses on killing vampires (who are played by other real people, and have their own goals). Or maybe you would prefer to try to become a vampire yourself, and hunt the Hunters.
Staff-run quests, as another example, often have game-changing effects depending on how players choose to participate in them. For example we recently had a mutiny happen on a pirate ship, and players could choose to support either the captain or the mutineers. More players supported the mutineers and the captain lost, so the area was changed to reflect this: the former captain is now in the brig, and the area offers a new built-in quest in which she tries to bribe players to help her take revenge. We are a small mud with a dedicated staff, and that means that we can provide a lot of support for individual players who want to work within the parameters of the game world to make things happen. So if any of this sounds good to you, come and check us out :)

I'd like to second the above 2 suggestions. In addition, there's Wheel of Time mud (wotm) where your actions can determine who wins the war. There's also moos such as Sindome or Star Conquest, but those are little different.

I'd like to recommend you try out tgMUD. It's a very heavily player-driven MUD, so you can join clans, explore the land, interact with other players, and have a noticeable effect on the story of the MUD, even leaving a lasting impression in the lore that will be told for years to come. In addition, we have serious story arcs being worked on, and new areas under construction. And when you're tired of roleplaying, you are free to go off and kill things (although I can't promise the battles being too epic). If that interests you, here's our information: Website: http://www5.tgchan.org:27744/Connection: www5.tgchan.org PORT 5555 IRC: #tgmud @ irc.rizon.net

I can second tgmud. Any coffeemud is nice, because coffeemud is a great codebase, and tgmud is literally the only active not-in-development coffeemud I'm aware of. They have deviated from coffeemud--I'm not saying they haven't--but I don't know by how much; I've never played a completely stock coffeemud.
I will put lost souls here--see my post on another recent thread--simply because it's what I'm playing at the moment. But I suspect that you may not be looking for that--it doesn't give you a "goal", or anything, besides "go get more powerful any way you can". It's less of a mud and more of a world simulation--there's nothing, and I mean nothing, that makes a player different from an npc for instance.
For good pve, there's 7th plane. It was, once upon a time, based off godwars, but pk no longer happens and, to be quite honest, Lyanic redid so much that you can't even see the godwars resemblance.
I'm going to assume you've tried Discworld, Batmud, and 3 Kingdoms. If you haven't, all three of them are good. They're also three of the really active muds--upwards of 200--along with Aardwolf and the ire stuff and a few others. Of them, batmud has what you want the most, but you have to get to rather a high level to get there; there's merchants as a guild and you can, for instance, build ships, but you generally "reincarnate" into it with literally hundreds of millions in experience. I've never played a merchant on there, so I can't speak too much about it.
Hope I helped.

I think you will enjoy The Night. It's set in modern time with some paranormal stuff going on. There's plenty to do, right now there's a war going on between the two rival gangs. You don't have to be in a gang to fight people though. There's plenty of crime or you can be a good guy, a cop! We're on an island, there's a lot of other islands to live on too.. there's a combat system in place you would need to hunt animals and spar other players to get your combat dice up. There's a lot of ways to make cash, buy/rent homes, own cars/motorcycles, get married have kids, dogs, become a Prime Minister a judge or even the President.
Create a character and try it out, very friendly crowd and we love new players. You can look up The-night on here or go to the website.
