These questions personally irritate me. A lot. Go to http://bluemilecloud.com/hosting/virtual-private-servers-vps/ and buy the 19 dollar per month basic package. It costs less than your cable bill. It costs less than your cell phone bill. It probably costs less than your monthly coffee. You can make this much at minimum wage in three hours. Buying a real service is not expensive. If you're going to run a mud, then run a mud for real and invest in it. Stop trying to be cheap. -dentin Alter Aeon MUD http://www.alteraeon.com

I don't know..what....to think...what the...what are you saying? Are you insinuating he is too cheap to get a paid shell? Or, too lazy to get a job? or... I don't even.... maybe even stop drinking coffee....?
Maybe the guy just wants to try it out, see if it is the right thing for him to do...
Again, I don't even....

Buying a real service is not expensive. If you're going to run a mud, then run a mud for real and invest in it. Stop trying to be cheap. You know what, those things add up and pretty soon you don't have left over money for a mud if you buy everything you see under the assumption "it costs less that your cable bill". There are about 340000 different things that I want to try that "cost less than my cable bill", and maybe if they were free, I'd try them.

So, I kind of agree with dentin. Kind of.
If you have a job, yes, do this. It's not a huge deal--nowadays, that's 2 lunches at mcdonalds. If you don't, well, take what you can get. I can see why the post would irritate dentin, but I can also see why someone might need it--I myself have an income of 0, with all money going to my college fees and dorm fees and...you get the idea. There's also the issue of being under 18, possibly, and having parents who don't understand what they're being asked to buy, and I also have to bring up the point that, for $19 a month, I can get a computer that's better than a vps for the cost of a vps for a year, and I'm going to have internet anyway, probably. Again, extenuating circumstances, like college dorm rooms and IT policies...
Perhaps be a bit...gentler, for lack of a better word, dentin--I agree with what you're saying, but no need to put someone down because they're looking for free hosting.

I agree with camlorn, if someone is just running a small mud getting their own VPS really is overkill. The mud community has a long tradition of providing free hosting and I think that's a good thing. Of course, sometimes you get what you pay for.

Got your own broadband internet connection and a old spare computer on hand or the ability to virtualize a host within an existing computer that's up 24/7? Do it yourself. Its ridiculously easy and its not like a mud chews up tremendous amounts of bandwidth.

You do realize not everyone has their own broadband connection? It might be their parents, their friend's, or through some apartment agreement.
In any case, some ISP's terms of service prohibit running servers at all (not that that stops people, but you know). It'd be nice not to have to break rules or abuse access to someone elses' internet connection to engage in a hobby.
A MUDs bandwidth usage is relatively small it's true, especially given the few people playing these days by comparison to the population, but it is some bandwidth.
*Your advice is fine if one is living on their own and thus is directly in charge of the internet connection and other things and can mess around with it without getting in trouble or causing trouble for other people. Oh, and having a job that pays enough for luxuries, that's important too.

Why not google free mud hosting instead of dealing with angry MUD owners bickering over what you should do?
