1. Diku-based derivatives: most bug-free implementation? Sat Jun 30, 2012 [6:28 AM]

I recently decided to take up a project working on a DikuMUD
derivative of some sort. It's been long time goal of mine to
produce a playable MUD so that a couple of friends can play
around (and maybe some other non-friends), and I think now
is as good a time as any.

I've always found DikuMUD and its derivatives to be the most
intuitive to play, and kind of characteristic of what an
RPG-type MUD would look like (to me). Pretty much all of the
MUDs I used to play were all ROM or ROT based. As such, I'd
like to start working on one of those.

Before I start though, I'd like to pick the brains of people
who have been dealing with these kinds of questions probably
for a decade or more...

Which of these code bases have known problems, as far as
bugs go? Right now, I'm mostly worried about which codebases
have any kind of networking issues I might have to deal
with, or random game-breaking bugs that require a lot of
tweaking to get working again. Since I don't know much about
network stuff, I'm kind of relying on the wisdom of the
original developers to keep my stuff going, so I'd like to
ensure there aren't a lot of known issues before I start
working on one of them, and later not being able to fix it.

Sorry of this is the wrong place, or the question has been
asked a million times, and thank you for your time.

SmaugFUSS or tbaMUD should be the more stable versions.

Except those aren't Rom or rot.

That's alright. While I would prefer ROM/ROT and ROM/ROT
derived codebases, if there are any that are quite stable that
are derived from the the Diku line, I don't mind if they
aren't ROM or ROT.

Presumably I can make a game out of any of these.

In that case, probably the latest tbaMUD as it is still being
developed and the stability is good, at least they claim super
stability.
