Here's a few questions I've come across from newbies on my MUD that I thought I'd share. Most of them make no sense and go to show how YOUNG the players seem to be getting as time goes on. MUD's used to be created and played by college kids only, no they're being ransacked by kids fresh out of grade school, that's if they didn't get held back.

1) Kayla tells you 'sorry to bug ya again, i'm asking
something diff this time, can i change my race to
Magius ?' (Magius is a name of a Dragonlance Char)

You tell Kayla 'There's no such race'

Kayla tells you 'but how come i see [ Shadow ] on
Kaillen ?

2) Roman tells you 'What DO you do withthe sould you get?
I was reading Wanderlust and I saw that....and I
wondered what you did wif them'

( To this day, I'm still trying to figure out what in the hell Roman was talking about. This is direct copy and paste. It came out of nowhere, there was no previous discussion between us two at all, he logged on and said that right away.)

3) Silfir OOCs 'what does it mean when you use the consider
command on a monster and it says death will thank you
for your gift?' (my favorite one)

4) Wisper tells you 'if i get a makeover coupon can i
change from knight to mage and keep my lvl and skills???'

(Note: Makeover coupon, gives a free STRING for 1 object
they have)

5) In discussing to this player why he could not use the
name 'Darklord', he asks this:

Darklord says 'can I name myself 007'


Well, I hope you were able to find something here to laugh about, if not, I'll show you were to plant your lips. Got any similar or just as retarded? I stopped collecting them because it got to be too many, which made it not so funny anymore, it just pissed me off because it told me some of these people are ignorant to the rules (for those who are beyond level 1, like the mid to high level people who still ask dumb questions)

On the mud I play on, we have a few jokers out there who like to try to get past the authorization system. Occasionally when no immortals are on, they will turn it to auto-auth to help speed up new chars. My favorites are when they made the characters:
Wonderduck (a pixie gladiator) and
Fathamster (a gimp assassin (don't ask))
There are more, but those are the first one's off the top of my head.

Heh, yeah, I used to copy down choice quotes, but I'd only put down the ones that were funny or different in some way... Such as the following:

There was a newbie who kept asking me to marry him. Finally he got the point and turned to the other female character on the mud...

[OOC] Ebon : C'mon Adrienna, WE'RE getting married...
[OOC] Keolah : ...
[OOC] Keolah : There's something about Adrienna I have to tell you... :p
[OOC] Keolah giggles uncontrollably.

Namely, that Adrienna is actually played by a married guy with two kids... Although we were too busy laughing at him to tell him that.

(It was a spell that blinded people... and he was casting it on himself...)

Hehe, we keep a notice board for such things, the original intent of the board was to post notices about game functions and things but it's mostly used as a final resting place for someone who says something dumb or for pretty much anything :)

Heres a few, off the notice board.
*note the name on the left is the person whom posted the notice after the dash '-'.

That's a perfectly valid question though - and one which I remember being unsure about when I started, as well. It obviously implies that the match is very one-sided, but there's no indication as to which way it is unbalanced: will death thank me for killing the monster, or for giving up my own life?

And yes, I know the answer now, but back then I was still playing my first Diku and had to take a guess. Death never did thank me, though.

We should compare IP addresses. I'm pretty sure some of my ex-players went to your MUD and vice-versa. Player age is dropping a lot and with it intelligence. I've had confirmed sixth graders on my game (confirmed because I spoke to their vice-principal).

Another one of my favorite continuing trends; young players who treat the game as a chat room and use 'chat/gossip' where 'tell' would be appropriate.

The MUD I'm currently coding for has /no/ global chat line for this very reason.

They _could_ have meant the question in that valid sort of way, but most likely they were clueless and about to hit enter on 'k monster'. The fact that the word 'death' was mentioned at all should have been a clue, considering the fact that he/she/it (Death) is not rumored to be very forgiving. Death, along with pain, suffering, famine, and disease are some of the words I tend to avoid.

To this day I still find it funny that you can name a character 'Death' on a Diku, and then "chat thank you for your gift!" whenever anyone dies. How about 7+ year old jokes, eh?

I always liked having characters called things like "you" or "info", and confusing people with emotes.

Apparently, he died, and wanted to know how to get his eq from his corpse. Fortunate that he figured that out, though, as he then proceeded to die a couple dozen more times.

Perhaps it could be a valid question, however, this person just so happened to have been playing for a while already, which was why I had posted that. However, just a wee bit of common sense would tell ya not to challenge it. When I first started out MUDing and seen that message 9 years ago, I stayed away. The Consider command gives you a rough estimate of your chances of killing a MOBILE. I don't think that 'Death will thank you for your gift', would work at all in the sense that the MOBILE or even a PLAYER would be easy to kill because 'thanking' does not relate to difficutly as being easy.... only hard or nearly impossible.

Hrm... not sure if that makes sense to anyone else, but I see it, I've just never been very good at explaining.

But why should death thank me for the gift, when it's the mob that'll be "delivering" me to him? Put another way, if I sacrifice a PC corpse to the gods, do the gods "thank" (as in reward) me, or the corpse, for the "gift"?

The message itself is poorly thought out.

Bob the Newbie is on his quest for glory. His journey takes him past a deep, dark cavern which just begs to be explored. Lighting his torch, he begins to descend through the depths of the cavern.

In the centre, he finds a large, red dragon, snoring away happily. Bob circles him, looking for a weak point to attack. Believing he had found one, Bob drew his sword, let out a battle cry and charged. The dragon, having been out on the town the night before, had a really, really bad head and was awakened by this noise.

Bob sat up.

THANKS, said Death.

Oh..death will thank him the MOB too, but on your way to the pearly gates, death will great you and thank you for offering yourself to him ;)

They'll be rewarding your soul for sacrificing yourself, not rewarding your corpse ;)

'Death will thank you for your gift,' could mean a lot of different things.

1) Death will be pleased that you die and go to to his realm.
2) Death will be pleased that your opponent dies.
3) Death will be pleased by someone as powerful as your opponent dying, but you don't have much of a chance.
4) Death will thank you for fighting, since people will die.

Et cetera..

Similarly, 'Now where did that chicken go..?' could mean several things as well:

1) You're better off killing chickens, they'll give more experience.
2) You're better off killing chickens, this thing is way too tough for you.

That is why I always loathed the consider messages in stock circle. It's a toss-up between a host of meanings, and a horrible thing for newbies who don't make the right guess. And after all, consider is mainly a newbie tool.

Wow. Thats just sad. You gotta love those people though. Its kind of fun watch the immature little kids piss off the imms.

I don't think MUDs are just for college people. Im 14 and I've never done anything on the lists above. I try to read all the help files before asking too many questions. I make up my own names, and I try to make them fit my race. I would never ask someone on a MUD to marry me. (You never know who's actually a married guy with 2 kids. lol)

The problem isn't age, its just a matter of seriousness. There are some people who are just playing to piss off the imms. Well... OK i've done that before, it was pretty funny, but I'm over that now... honestly...

yeh, thats true, I've been playing MUDs since I was 14 or so...but I'm not a moron.

But as for playing I class, I do that, but I'm also 23 and in college, so I can get away with it. :)
