1. Story-focused MUD? Sun Aug 12, 2012 [5:13 PM]

I am looking for a MUD with a fleshed out, engrossing story. I've tried
several, and haven't found anything close. Story seems to be an
afterthought. And, I'm not looking for a mud that relies on players or GMs to
create the stories either. To put it another way, which mud is the closest to
IF?

Not sure what IF is, but our mud is very story-focused. If you're interested in a medieval-fantasy kind of mud with elves and dwarves, vampires and werewolves, I recommend you check out Dark Risings.

DR started out as a Whitewolf/Vampire themed mud, but over the last 14 years of continuous play it has evolved into a lot more, based both on player contributions and on the way we as a staff have worked to thread everything together into a cohesive whole. Everything we do, from the skills and spells we put in to the equipment and areas we build, is done with an eye to enhancing and exploring the story further.

Say hello if you drop by :)

Thank you for the suggestion. I'll check your MUD out.

IF stands for interactive fiction, which refers to most single-player text
games. I am looking for a MUD like that, with NPCs with personality and an
ongoing scripted story as motivation to play.

Hmm, that's an interesting thought; if I ever get around to writing a mud, I keep saying I'll do something like that (but then again, my latest idea is a sort of empiremud clone with godwars2 combat...so it probably wouldn't lend itself well to this if I did write it).

Would be interested to see what people come up with.

I can't think of anything right away, not with one large overarching story. There's plenty of muds with lore, etc, but to be honest, any sort of large story is hard to do; for me, at least, suspension of disbelief is shattered to little tiny pieces when everyone is running around with the shield made from the bones of the dragon that's the final boss of the quest in which the dragon should only exist once. I know this is one of those things you have to have in order for the game to be actually fun, but I don't think that lends itself to the idea of an IF-style mud; I think the best you're going to find is a mud with a lot of good quests.

Have a look at any of the various lpmuds for good quests; discworld has quite a few good ones, including blowing up the alchemists' guild. I really can't think of any others, unfortunately, with as many quests all around, and nothing comes to mind that ties all the quests into one story-line.

Well, I could settle for a MUD that had good quests, as long as they were
well written, provided interesting choices, or had actual fleshed out
characters. That sort of thing.

Is there a consensus on which MUD has the best quests?

I don't think so. I have heard good things about 4 Dimensions, Legend, and DiscWorld though.

Thanks, guys!

Does anyone else have an opinion on the matter? What
about a strongly
quest-focused MUD with good quests? Any suggestions for
that?
