I am looking for some software that I can use to create 2d
maps of the rooms in my mud. I have found a few online but
they do not allow saving/loading or exporting to any image
format.

You could try the application that KaVir made for MUSHclient.
Our grid maps, (based on the Wilderness code), look really good in the client sidebar.

I still have a copy of Arcanum hosted on my site, which is not
only a great mapper, but which also creates stock ROM areas.

What ever happened to good ole' graph paper? You can get so
much done with just a few sheets and I don't know about the
rest of you, but I am somehow able to keep my graph paper with
me regardless of what computer I'm on, so I can always keep my
zones with me. I've gone through 3-4 computers in the last 10
years and each time I get a new one I forget to back my maps
up, but I have the paper so it doesn't matter.

I was unable to decompress the files with Arcanum. Kind of
wanted to take a peek at it.
