Have you checked the FAQ? ;)
(Yes, yes...I am 10 today and have no self control.)
Seriously...(I promise) What exactly are you wanting to do? Are you wanting to build on an existing mud or are you wanting to create a mud of your own? How much experience do you have mudding? Have you worked on anyone else's mud? Have you done any programming? Can you code in C/C++? Are you familiar with Unix/Linux?
In general I would recommend working for someone else for at least six months to get a feel for how a mud is put together and how it runs on a day to day basis. You can use the time to learn how to build and to find a hosting service you are comfortable with. You can begin to learn to code or start a search for a trustworthy coder you can work closely with.
Also check out the resources section of TMC. It gives links to various codebases, building guides and other helpful sites.
There are several places you can go for more help but without knowing exactly what you need it is hard to point you to the proper ones.

I am not familiar with C/C++ or Unix/Linux. I would like to build on an existing mud, and then maybe if i succeed, i would like to create my own mud.

Myself and my staff would be glad to teach you, adam_cohen, but since you did not provide an email address, I could not reach you there.
You can reach me at kaos8891 (at) hotmail.com, and I'll be glad to discuss teaching you to build.
And I hereby roast myself for going off-topic in the Builder's forums. My apologies, folks, as the original post -was- on topic, but his want was OT.

Its not very hard to set up a rom- Search the web for a codebase that is compatable with your operating system, then run it (it will tell you how to run and make an IMM in the faqs that come with it) however, you should definitely get someone to teach you how to run the actual mud, as people have said. Good luck.

Wouldn't you be 'flame'-broiled instead?
