This is not a discussion regarding advanced coding and design in a MUD and, as such, belongs on the Promotions forum.

On the other hand, it's likely to turn into a discussion of advanced psychosis.

I was just beginning to think you'd cooled off for a while. Guess I was too optimistic. mann_jess wrote: Just because this thread is going to be archived without relevant context...
I suggest anyone interested in pursuing NiMUD read a recent discussion regarding it, its license, and its author: http://www.mudconnect.com/discuss/discuss.cgi?mode=MSG2&area=legal&message=5869&page=0
In short, the MUD does not comply with the Merc/Diku licenses, is in violation of a third license (the GPL), and the author seemingly does not have a right to retroactively apply conditions as he is intending to. The thread above is worth a read regarding these issues.
Best of Luck, -Jess
Tyche wrote: Even more important, the author has shown that they are likely to modify or revoke their licenses at any time. So one would be a fool to waste any time with anything they release.
By the way... just an update for everyone else who couldn't care less to follow up on this: Locke/Laerrus/Herb seems to have updated a few files to include the Diku copyright notice at the top in his most recent version. Of course, he didn't put it at the top of quite all of them he should have, so he's still in violation for that reason. He's also attempting to release his code under the GPL, which of course violates not only the GPL, but also the Diku and Merc license too, and plays off ALL the work of every other person participating in the creation of his codebase as his own to license as he wishes. Locke: Just so you know, every time you bring up your codebase here, I take further action. Last time you posted, I found your google code entry and made sure there were open issues and comments regarding your theft (linking here, and to the broken licenses). I thought that would be enough, but lo and behold, you commented there and came back to TMC. So, I followed up with contacting google code and the FSF (since you're now blatantly breaking the GPL as well). In compiling a list of violations, it seems you are currently breaking 5 (that's right, five) licenses, all at once. Good job. I doubt anything will come of my contact with google or the FSF, and I'd really rather just leave it alone. But, if you continue posting promos for your illegal and stolen code here, I'll keep taking steps until the violations are corrected or I run out of options. My advice still stands. Give it a rest until people have sort of "forgotten" about your ridiculous behavior. Once everything has blown over, come at it with a clear head. Because, this stuff isn't helping you at all. Best of Luck, -Jess

Have you fixed that bug with your uptimes yet? Last I recall, you posted asking for help mentioning that you were only getting short uptimes before NiMUD crashed and your logs didn't tell you why. Admittedly you didn't phrase it that way, but the post was clearly a cry for help.

Regardless of Locke's selfish actions, this is not an appropriate reaction and I do not think it is healthy to encourage it. My energy would be better spent in a more positive way trying to get whomever moderates this forum to move Locke's off-topic posts to a different location.

I've concluded that you're all Locke's sockpuppets, each doing your part to make sure this thread lives a long and healthy life. Unfailingly, every time the thread drops 3 posts from the top, someone bumps it... leading to no responses for the next few hours until it drops 3 posts again, and gets revived by someone new.
It's a curse, I tell you. This thread will never die! NeEeeEver.

Unfortunately, it was bullying, which I do not think is healthy or right. Lay off the drugs dude. Too much valium or ritalin. I'm all for bullying Locke. I'm in fact for anything that makes Locke uncomfortable to post on these forums, the guy is a class act douchebag. My energy would be better spent in a more positive way trying to get whomever moderates this forum to move Locke's off-topic posts to a different location.
No it wouldn't, these forums are, for the most part, not moderated, I'd expect someone whose been a member as long as you have to know that, but I guess not. (Comment added by Drizzt1216 on Fri Jul 17 8:14:11 2009)My curiousity as to how donky was so naive of the moderation that goes on here after 9 long years made me do a search, and I suspect the answer lies in the fact he has 48 posts in those 9 years with most of them being

There is no issue with uptime. The MUD has stayed active for as long as 33 days without issue. Whatever issue it experienced after 33 days, it was back online within 30 seconds.

The only active account I have is Laerrus. I do not use sockpuppetry to maintain threads on "TMC" .. whomever is posting here is doing so independently of me.

That itself is an issue. Paragon (a tbaMUD I hosted) went over 200 days without crashing on more than one occasion.

A correctly configured server should be able to stay online indefinitely, and ideally, your codebase should too -- (of course, sin intentional downtime) It seems weird I have to point this out... your game shouldn't have bugs that cause it to crash. You generally want to <b>fix<b> those, so, ya know, it <b>doesn't<b> crash. (Comment added by mann_jess on Mon Jul 20 20:08:22 2009)...I fail at html :(

Hi
I am going completely off topic and with no shame but I have to ask..
I have been playing Fall Out 3 in between killer work shifts so I could be wrong but isn't Herbert "Daring" Dashwood coloured??
From you tube if it is Locke - that dude is as white as me.
How the hell is that a caricature?

Herbert "Daring" Dashwood is an old white guy with a gray beard. I also was the inspiration for "Three Dog" (I was a disc jockey in college with two of the credited programmers). I am part Cherokee (8.5%) and part Irish (majority) (and part Dutch, I was also told). That's the beauty of roleplaying games: you can look like anything. (Comment added by Laerrus on Sat Jul 25 17:06:22 2009)By the way it's not exactly kind to call someone "colored" .. Hi
Thanks I had him confused with another character within the game - when I play it tends to be early hours of the morning and so I am not intensively following it.
I apologise I did not mean to offend by the use of the term coloured - it is a local slang which means a person of colour we sometimes also apply the same when asking are they cauc or white? Meaning a person of caucasian descent.
But yes I will mind how I word things in future as not my intention to cause offence.
Thanks Sherav

Oh, wow, I hadn't even seen the bit about how Three Dog is based on him too. Comedy gold. Locke: When apophenia, paranoia, and narcissism collide.
